Because you’re searching an answer to this question you must either be coming toward the end of pregnancy, or you’re still 6 months away but second guessing yourself and worrying about absolutely everything!
Either way, here are the outfits your baby will wear in the hospital and when leaving hospital.
What your newborn will wear in hospital
When they first arrive into the world
Hospitals will provide straightforward attire for babies.
After your baby is delivered, you’ll likely do skin to skin when you first meet them, before they are the wrapped snugly in a flannel blanket (like a towel).
Your baby will then likely spend their first few hours just in a nappy or swaddled in a flannel blanket with just a nappy on. They may even be dressed in a side-snap bodysuit or simple gown (all these essentials will be supplied to you by the hospital).
If your baby is jaundice on arrival, then it’s likely they will be in their nappy under a lamp for the first few hours or couple of days.
If they’re jaundice and under a lamp they’ll also be given a cool looking and soft protective eyewear while under the lamp.
After birth, waiting for discharge, or staying in the hospital a couple of days
Newborns typically wear a few different clothing items during their stay at the hospital, but what they wear will depend on the hospital’s protocols, climate, and individual preferences.
Some hospitals will have some newborn clothing that you can borrow, like little wooly hats and vests.
However, I would advise that you do provide your own newborn items for your baby to wear.
You’ll want to pack three sleepsuits, three short-sleeved vests, a cozy cardigan, and a cute little hat. Just the essentials to keep your baby snug and stylish!
And always get the clothes in newborn size.
If your little one arrives early, then you can also find premature sizes.
Equally, if you welcome a big boy or girl into the world, you’ll want to go up a size from newborn.
Leaving the hospital
You know what, babies sometimes get over dressed for their first ride home.
Here’s a tip: dress your baby just like you’d dress yourself.
So, if you’d feel sweaty in a knitted hat during the summer, chances are your little one might feel the same way.
When it’s hot out, go for a comfy T-shirt and light cotton pants. Or just a baby blanket over those adorable bare legs.
Keep it breezy for your little sunshine! ☀️
What about the chillier months?
Start with a cosy onesie as the base, add some comfy pants or leggings, and then layer up with a soft sweater or jacket.
Top it off with a warm hat, some socks, and, of course, a soft blanket to keep them extra toasty. It’s all about keeping that precious bundle nice and warm during that first winter outing!
Be careful though with too many layers – it’s not safe to have too many thick layers for your newborn when they’re in a car seat.
Using bunting bags or snowsuits in car seats isn’t safe. If there’s a crash, that fluffy material can squish down, and your kiddo might not stay put in the seat if there was an accident on your way home.
The safest bet? Stick to a blanket or go for those shower cap-style car seat covers. They won’t mess with the seat straps and won’t come between your little one and the car seat, keeping things safe and snug.
